A Sense of Community

I wrote this back in 2017, before real estate, before kids’ sports schedules, before committee meetings. I was just an ambitious girl who believed in her hometown  and rereading it today, I still do.

A Sense of Community
Living in La Junta my entire life, I never had to leave to appreciate its beauty. From very early on I knew that this was my home and it will only be as good as you help make it. I married my high school sweetheart and set to work on making La Junta the best it can be not just for my family but for yours too. I love the small-town atmosphere, the fact that people know me on a first name basis and stop me often to genuinely ask, “How are you”. Nothing beats walking into Copper Kitchen on a Sunday morning and seeing Larry and the gang greet your family with good morning hugs and yes for my girls some kisses too! I can’t tell you how often I go into a restaurant and don’t even really have to order, Shyla at Jodi’s knows just how I like my steak, Nicole at Mexico City knows that I’d rather pass on the guacamole, and you can count on Cheryl at the Barista greeting me with a frozen lemonade on one of La Junta’s infamous summer days and it doesn’t just stop there. Levi at the Fox opened up super early after a late movie so I can find that a lost wallet was right in our seat where we left it the night before, Bob at Wal-Mart pharmacy directed me to some cold medicine that saved the day and he threw in his favorite line “and it’s cheaper too”. My experiences with the small businesses are always so personal. Experiences like these are why my family and I are pleased to call La Junta home. Experiences like these are why my family and I will ALWAYS call La Junta home. You see this isn’t just customer service they are providing. It’s so much more than that. It’s been said that “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community”. Ladies and gentleman La Junta has "it", If you haven’t experienced "it" yet I encourage you all to get out into your community. Experience the small businesses, the local attractions, the overwhelming sense of “caring”. Get out and feel for yourself why it’s truly better here.
Re-reading that for the first time in many years and it still cuts straight to my heart. Sure, people from the original story are different now but that’s not what made this town special. What made it special was the people behind those counters, the familiar faces, the way kindness seemed to be baked into every corner of town. And that hasn’t changed.
Back then, I didn’t realize this love for La Junta would someday become my life’s work, helping families find home here. The faces may change, the storefronts too, but the heart of this community still beats strong. And as long as we keep caring for one another, La Junta will always be home.
