The Fort Carson military base is located south of Colorado Springs. It is about a 20-minute drive to downtown Colorado Springs and a 1.5-hour drive to Denver via the I-25 N.

Fort Carson started life as Camp Carson in 1942. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the city of Colorado Springs purchased a large parcel of land south of the city and donated it to the U.S War Department. It was designated Fort Carson in 1954.

Since its inception, Fort Carson has hosted nine divisions. During World War II alone, more than 100,000 soldiers trained at the base. Today there are over 25,000 members of the military assigned to the post and more than 38,000 military family members living in the area.

Fort Carson is also close to numerous golf courses, ski resorts, and recreational facilities with outdoor pools. On the base itself there is an Outdoor Recreation Complex for fitness enthusiasts. The base also offers adventure programs for kids.

On rainy days you can visit the Fort Carson 4th Infantry Division History Museum to learn about the history of the base. Alternatively you can head into Colorado Springs where there are numerous entertainment venues including movie theatres and bowling alleys.
