Explore Monument and Palmer Lake
The Tri-Lakes area of northern El Paso County in Colorado, boasts two wonderful communities; Monument and Palmer Lake. Monument, Colorado, at 7135 feet elevation, has all the charm of small town living with the convenience of being close to Colorado Springs to the south. Situated next to Pike National Forest to the west, this community has wonderful views of the mountains and the picturesque Air Force Academy grounds. Many different types of homes are available in this area bordering Black Forest, from condominiums and horse property to forested estates. Lewis Palmer school district adds a level of pride and prestige to this community with its quality programs, successful sports teams and high test scores. The neighboring community of Palmer Lake shares the same schools and the benefits of being a small town. The downtown area across from the lake has several great restaurants and is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. The homes in Palmer Lake are older and unique on smaller lots generally than in Monument to the east. Founded in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer, this town has plenty of history and character.

Palmer lake is bordered to the north by the Greenland Open Space Preserve and is adjacent to the 15-mile (24 km) Santa Fe Regional Trail, which runs south through Monument to the southern boundary of the Air Force Academy and follows part of the old Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The two reservoirs behind Palmer Lake are accessible by a trail used by hikers, bicyclists, snowshoers and fishermen. The mountains behind the town have a matrix of trails connecting visitors and residents to canyons and ridges, friendly to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Visitors are advised to bring a map or a local guide when exploring the trails, and should be aware of wildlife alerts. Monument is home to Levelett Park, Limbach Park, and Dirty Woman Park.
